Yet another quiet day! I’m going to have to do something exciting soon so that my faithful blog followers aren’t bored. J
Went for a run today and my leg felt the best it’s been in a few weeks. I actually was able to run fast. The more I think about it the more I believe I’ll need to go through rehabilitation / surgery on my hamstring when I get home. Shouldn’t have to deal with constant pain & tightness in my leg. What a bummer…but hey, I’ve met a lot of people that have it a lot worse than I. Got to be thankful for what I have instead of dwelling on the negatives – my how far I’ve come!
I was supposed to go with Sandrah to Gayaza Highschool for “Culture Day.” Today is Ugandan Independence day and Gayaza HS was hosting a “culture exhibition” where the students and visitors would be introduced to an array of different cultural aspects of the different tribes of Uganda (there are many). This is the event I bought the konzu for (traditional Ugandan formal wear).
I was in my room getting when Sandrah walked in.
“Hey – Culture Day has been cancelled.”
“Why?”
“Outbreak of swine flu. All travel to and from school and all non-school related activities have been cancelled by the department of Education.”
They are taking swine flu very seriously here. I haven’t heard of any outbreaks yet – but I am prepared with masks and tamiflu (thanks Kerin!).
After “culture day” we were supposed to go to a business convention at the Lugogo Bypass and then to Cascades for an event called, “Break a Leg for Charity.”
The Gayaza event getting cancelled messed everything up. At 3:00 Sandrah asked me to if I wanted to go get drinks with her and her “English friend.”
“Is he close?”
“No. It’ll take two matatus to get there.”
“How long will that take?”
“An hour and a half.”
Umm – no thanks. I told her I didn’t want to go. She wasn’t happy. Oh well.
The rest of the afternoon I did work. I have set up a meeting next Tuesday at 10:00 AM with BRAC, one of the largest microfinance lenders in the world, and I needed to brush up on my Microfinance knowledge.
At 7:00 Maggie told me she wasn’t going to the charity event. Then Emily told me she wasn’t going either. Then Angelica left without me because she thought I wasn’t going. I didn’t feel like taking a boda boda all the way to Cascades by myself. Yeah…went to sleep at 10:00 on Friday night. I’m super cool I know.
The highlight of my day was getting a call from Anand, Rob and Brian at midnight. I was half asleep when we were speaking – but I haven’t laughed so hard since I’ve come to Uganda. Always great to hear from the boys. Miss them all.
